Gameplay[edit]

The gameplay of Dynasty Warriors 5 is based on previous 'Dynasty Warriors' games. It is a hack-and-slash beat-'em-up 3-D action game.

The game features multiple modes. Musou Mode presents a number of chronologically consecutive battle stages revolving around one chosen character, augmented by animation and character-voiced storytelling that provides context for battles and actions. Free Mode allows a player to play default levels and those that have been completed in Musou Mode one at a time. Both Musou Mode and Free Mode allow for two-player cooperative gameplay. Challenge Mode introduces a number of specialized stages with specific challenges, including time trials. In extreme mode you can buy many items. The Encyclopedia feature gives a description of each officer in Dynasty Warriors 5, including every non-player character. The Options feature stores viewed pre-rendered videos and offers gameplay and presentation options to the player.

The stronghold feature from Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires is also included in Dynasty Warriors 5. This aspect of gameplay introduces bases to the battlefield. Friendly bases may need protection, while defeating enemy bases earns bonuses to attack or defense or a musou and health-restoring item. Neutral bases can also be captured as strategic points.

Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends[edit]

Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends (真・三國無双4: 猛将伝) is a minor expansion to Dynasty Warriors 5. This game was released on November 16, 2005 and is playable only on the PlayStation 2 video game console.

Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends does not allow the player to play Musou Mode or Free Mode if the player does not possess the Dynasty Warriors 5 game disc. It brought back Xtreme Mode and Legend Mode from Dynasty Warriors 4: Xtreme Legends, It also introduces new Destiny Mode for the First Time.

Xtreme Mode is a parallel to Shura Mode in Shin Sangokumusou 4: Special, in which the objective of the game is for the human-controlled character to survive as long as possible while collecting gold dropped by enemies to regain health and increase stats temporarily.

In Destiny Mode, the player is first allowed to customize a character. After creating a personalized character, a player will be asked to join the Kingdom of Shu, Wei and Wu. While in this mode, you will be playing as a character with very few attacks (starting off with only 2 fundamental hits) and will be 'protected' by a chosen officer near the character. The officer will heal the character continuously when injured during battle, so long as the character is nearby. A unique feature of Destiny Mode is that at times the player is given the option to betray one force, while setting a ruse for another. For example, a player receives a letter from Cao Cao, the King of Wei, in which he asks the player to defect from the Kingdom of Wu to the Kingdom of Wei. If the player defers the offer to switch sides their commander may approach them in the hopes of creating a ruse to destroy the opposing force. If the player chooses to accept the option from their commander they will fight for the other side temporarily. When the time is right their original commander will have them move the opposing commander to a set position which will trigger their ruse and supporting units will ambush the opposing commander to support the player's defection.

Shin Sangokumusou 4: Special[edit]

Shin Sangokumusou 4: Special (真・三國無双4: Special) is another expansion to the game. This game was released on December 22, 2006 on the Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows in Japan and shortly thereafter for Windows in Taiwan.

This version of the game is a combination of the original game and some Xtreme Legends features, including Legend Mode and Xtreme Mode. It does not include Edit Mode or Destiny Mode, but it does include the new items from Xtreme Legends. It includes gamepad support, allowing the user to use PlayStation 2 or Xbox 360-style controllers compatible with Windows.

The Windows version also has improved graphical features, such as real-time shadows.

Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires[edit]

Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires (真・三國無双4: Empires) is the second Dynasty Warriors Empires expansion by Omega Force of Koei. Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires was released on March 28, 2006 for both the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 video game consoles.

This game is focused upon strategy game play. In Empire Mode, which features five new stages not in Dynasty Warriors 5, the player initially enacts various policies within a chosen state by consulting with the state's officers and delegating responsibilities to others. Battle tactics can be discussed, a feature of other titles in the strategy genre, such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Other than Empire Mode, new items and weapons are introduced. Another new feature is the ability of being able to order non player officers to group, attack, or defend certain areas of the battlefield and choose which specific officer you wish to carry out these feats. Time limits can also be altered to fit your needs, also special tactics can be used to turn the tides of battle.

In addition to the original Dynasty Warriors 5 soundtrack, this expansion adds soundtracks from previous titles, including Dynasty Warriors 2, Dynasty Warriors 3 and Dynasty Warriors 4.

The Dynasty Warriors Empires expansion is the only expansion where players can play as 'minor' officers, that did not originally have their own storyline in any of the previous Dynasty Warriors games. These officers also do not have their own 'skin', but there are several group skins for them (in the same battle, officers of the same skin group look identical). In every other Dynasty Warriors game, minor officers are NPCs.

Stages[edit]

Many of the stages are recreations of notable battles present historically or from the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, while original creations became more common with the newer installments.

Trading Card Game[edit]

Koei published a series of trading card game (「真・三國無双 4」トレーディングカードゲーム) based on Dynasty Warriors 5 in 2005-7-29. The cards are illustrated by Hiroyuki Suwahara. Starter box (53 cards) cost 1500 yen, while booster pack (10 cards) cost 280 yen.

There are total 266 cards in the game, including 36 commander, 160 general, 35 strategy, 15 trap, 20 item. Booster pack include 10 cards from the set of 266.^[1]

In battle of Cheng Du, stop Pang Tong from dieingin the ambush. To do this either be Pang Tong,or reach the ambush location before him.

Play the Battle of Shi Shui Gate with the Alliedforces on the hard difficulty setting. Defeat 200opponents in less than two minutes to get the FireOrb.

Play the Battle of Nan Zhong with the Nanmanforces. Do not allow enemies into the main campand rescue Wu Tugu, King Duosi, and King Mulu toget the Elephant Harness.

Play the Guan Yu Escape level on any difficultysetting. Kill Zhang Liao immediately, withoutletting him escape. Keep killing officers untilabout gate 3. The special item message willappear. The item is at the beginning of the map.You should have a horse to hurry back there beforethe caravan is destroyed.

Play the Struggle for Nan Zhong with Meng Huo'sforces. Defeat three entire units that containbeastmasters within one minute of starting thebattle to get the Tiger Collar. This item allowsyou to start a battle with a tiger.

Mount a horse with a spear user and their third orfourth weapon. Attack five times than press yourcharge attack immediately after your fifth time.

In Free mode, select the Battle Of He Fei Castleas the Wu Forces on the Normal difficulty setting.Start by taking out the officers outside the firstgates. One of them will drop a Life +20. Next,kill Xu Huang for an Attack +8. Then, go aroundthe right side, killing all officers,sub-generals, and anyone with a name. You shouldalways get +4 power-ups. The officer on the horsewill drop a weapon. Collect it, then go throughthe 'security system'. You will eventually meetCao Ren. Kill him for a +8 Defense, then go up andkill Xu Zhu for +8 Attack. At the left of thisplatform is a crate with a weapon box in it. Gothrough the gate and take the path to the left.The officer there has a +8 Defense. Then, cutacross to the right and kill Sima Zhao for a +4Defense. Next, take out Sima Yi for a +8 Defense.Finally, complete the level by killing Cao Pi.This will max out the stats at the characterselection screen, but only half-way at the actionselection screen. You must use the level 20amulets to max this out. Also, this is not thebest place to use a fresh character. Get a littleboost by completing the Yellow Turban Rebellionlevel on the Easy difficulty setting a few timesto get some weapons and some basic stat boosts.

Play the Battle of Chi Bi with Cao Cao's forces.Defeat Zhuge Liang when his unit begin to getthe Art of War. This item allows boost items tolast longer.

Successfully complete the game with Zhou Yu tounlock Xiao Qiao.

Successfully complete the game with Xiahou Dun andZhang Liao to unlock Xiahou Yuan. Alternately,play half the character's Musou mode.

Successfully complete the game with Huang Zhong tounlock Wei Yan.

Play the Yellow Turban Rebellion with the Hanforces on the hard difficulty setting. Kill allthe officers and sub officers outside of the fortthat Zhang Jiao is in.

Play the Battle Of Fan Castle with the Shu forceson the hard difficulty setting. Defeat Cao Ren'ssub officers before the flood attack. The weaponreport appears after the flood attack.

Successfully complete the game with any two Weiofficers to unlock Zhang He.

Successfully complete the game with Zhuge Liang tounlock Yue Ying.

Successfully complete Cao Cao's Musou mode tounlock Yuan Shao.

Successfully complete Liu Bei's, Sun Jian's, andCao Cao's Musou modes to unlock Zhang Jiao.

Unlock all other characters in the game to unlockZuo Ci. Alternately, play half the character'sMusou mode.

Successfully complete the game with any Shuofficer to unlock Zhuge Liang.

Successfully complete the game with Meng Huo tounlock Zhu Rong.

Successfully complete the game with any Wu officerto unlock Zhou Tai.

Play the Battle Of Wu Zhang Plains on the harddifficulty setting. It is better to do this inMusou Mode than in Free Mode. Wu Zhang Plains is afive-star battle, but in Cao Pi's Musou Mode it isonly his fourth stage. Thus, if you do this inMusou Mode the difficulty will be loweredsomewhat. First, defeat any three generals (notsub-generals) quickly. The ones that all groupedin the center make good fodder, as except for WeiYan they are all generic. Once you kill threegenerals, Zhuge Liang will pass away. Continuefighting normally. At this point it would be agood idea to seal the enemy's supply route over tothe east. Soon you will see an event where JiangWei lays a group of automatic crossbows on thecentral platform. Now all you have to do is get upthere and break all of them. There will also bejuggernauts floating around, not to mention archertowers -- be careful. Once you have destroyed allsingle automatic crossbows, the precious item boxwill conveniently appear in the middle of thatcentral platform. Pick it up and finish the stageto earn your fourth weapon.

Defeat Meng Huo each time that he appears duringthe Nanman Campaign to unlock Meng Huo.Alternately, successfully complete the game withZhuge Liang and Lu Xun in Musou mode.

Successfully complete the game with Guan Yu andZhang Fei to unlock Liu Bei. Alternately,successfully complete Musou mode with four Shucharacters.

Play the Battle Of Xia Pi with Lu Bu's forces onthe hard difficulty setting. Defeat all theofficers including sub-officers before Cao Caoarrives without any ally officer dying.

Play the Battle Of Liang Province with Dong Zhuo'sforces on the hard difficulty setting. Take theeast and west bases, then defeat Ma Chao and Pang De.

Successfully complete any three Shu Story modes tounlock Jiang Wei.

Successfully complete the game with any three Shuofficers to unlock Pang Tong.

Successfully complete the game with Ma Chao tounlock Pang De.

Play the Battle Of Yi Ling with the Shu forces onthe hard difficulty setting. Defeat Ling Tong, GanNing, Lu Xun, and Sun Shang Xiang. Kill Sun ShangXiang quickly; when you meet her an intermissionsequence will begin and she will run away.

Play the Battle of Wan Castle on the harddifficulty setting. First, rendezvous with CaoCao. Then, lead him to the escape gates, defeatingenemies and generals (there will be two of them)along the way. Once Cao Cao leaves the castle andyou get the event where Dian Wei stays behind toblock the gates, the hard part begins. You mustnot let a single enemy past the gates until youget the message that Cao Cao's escape is inprogress. This usually happens after you havedefeated five or six troop leaders (the genericenemies with names over their heads). Be careful,as the troop leaders tend to ignore you and justrun straight past you. Once you get the message,the precious item box will appear slightly infront of you. At this point it does not matter ifyou let people past the gates (let too many andyou lose the stage though), so go pick it up.

You do not need to worry aboutsub-generals; just get each major general as theyshow up. After you defeat Guan Ping, immediatelygo south, as Sun Quan will show up in thesoutheast. Once you defeat Sun Quan, the preciousitem box will show up in the little nook betweenwhere Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei appeared. Grab theitem, then go up and defeat Liu Bei to help CaoCao escape.
