If you are using a product key taken from a sticker take a closer look at the sticker. It is almost certainly for Windows, not Office.
As John pointed out, many computers come with a free 60-day time limited trial of Office, and your time limit has expired.
You can buy a license for Office and use the Product Key that comes with it to 'activate' the current expired trial, without actually installing your purchased copy.
Right now you have 2 main options to decide, 'do I buy Office 2010 or 2013'. If you buy a 2010 license now, you can get a 'free upgrade' (but there are significant strings on the offer) to 2013. You can install a free trial of 2013 if you wish to see if you like it or not.
When buying Office 2010 you have to make 4 decisions:

This license type, often referred to as Full Packaged Product (FPP) in the past, includes a DVD, a 25-character Product Key, and a Quick Start Guide. The number of installations (2 or 3) and users (1 or 3) depends on the specific Office suite purchased.
A Traditional Disc product license can be transferred to a different PC if the user upgrades to a new PC or if the owner wants to sell it to someone else.

They can either give me the installer or give me a refund at this point. Hi all. The Digital River backup disk DOES contain the 64-bit folder to run from. Remember you need to uninstall all remnants of any Office 32-bit components beforehand. Microsoft has very thorough unique version-specific uninstallers at the Office support website you can run if there is any problem with the usual uninstall.
I tried pretty aggressively to get them to e-mail me the 64.bit exe file to run with the download but no one would. I guess you need to get to the right person. All their e-mails that said they didn't offer 64-bit installation were misrepresentations.
The trial version workaround solution sounds pretty good if it works for everyone--saves having to buy the backup disk.

No mention of not being able to continue using the old version ..
Previously, when you bought an 'upgrade' version or were given the 'free upgrade' in the equivalent offer it was made clear that the 'upgrade' version required proof of a 'qualifying' (aka older) version and the terms explicitly said that the new license replaced the old one. You could have one or the other installed.
This 'upgrade' point is not made in the Pre-launch Offer terms and conditions nor did I see it in the 2013 RTM MS License Terms document.
For example, in the 2007 MSLT it explicitly said this:

That is a restatement of the terms from the 2007 license. BUT !!! I don't recall seeing the use of the term 'Upgrade' anywhere in the 'Pre-Launch Offer'. In 2007 and earlier 'upgrade versions' the product was explicitly and clearly labeled as an upgrade. It simply would not install without the qualifying version present. That is not true with 2013, or even 2010.
So my interpretation is that the copy of 2013 you get using the 'Pre-launch Offer' is just that, a FREE, ADDITIONAL copy of Office, independent of the 2010 license you used to redeem the offer. I haven't yet seen references from MS to contradict that interpretation.
Yes, I agree that changing the 'Retail License' terms the way they did was a ********** marketing trick, since the offer is NOT equivalent to the original purchased copy. But since the offer is a 'free' copy, they can do what they want.
Personally, I understand the desire to milk all of the money they can out of the Office brand, but they could have very simply avoided this criticism by not using the label 'retail' on this type of license. They already had several other labels for the new license terms, or they could have made a new one. I'm talking about:
OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer,
MLK - Medialess Kit, 2007 and earlier)
PKC - Product Key Card, introduced in 2010
POSA - Point of Sale Activated
ESD - Electronic Software Download
1-computer online download
With all of those options, instead they decided to hide the severely downgraded license terms by reusing the 'retail' label.
